Frequently Asked Questions

01—What is Myotherapy? How is it different from Remedial Massage?

Myotherapy is a professional form of soft tissue therapy focused on managing musculoskeletal pain, movement restrictions and soft tissue dysfunction.

Rather than simply treating the area where you feel pain, Myotherapy takes a broader approach by considering your symptoms, movement, muscles and soft tissues, as well as your daily activities and exercise habits.

Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

  • Soft Tissue Therapy — addressing muscular tension and soft tissue restrictions
  • Deep Tissue Techniques — targeting deeper muscular tension
  • Dry Needling — targeting specific muscles and soft tissues
  • Cupping — used as an adjunct to help with local tissue mobility and muscular tightness
  • Joint Mobilisation — to assist with certain movement restrictions
  • Stretching & Movement Advice — tailored to your individual needs
  • Home Care Advice — helping you continue managing your body between treatments

Not every treatment is suitable or necessary for everyone. Your treatment approach will be tailored to your condition, symptoms and goals.

So, what is the main difference?

Remedial Massage focuses primarily on hands-on treatment of muscles and soft tissues, while Myotherapy takes a broader approach by considering your symptoms, movement and the factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.

Myotherapy isn’t simply a “more advanced massage” — it involves a different approach to assessment, treatment and ongoing management.

Dry needling uses very fine, sterile needles to target specific muscles and soft tissues. It may help reduce muscle tension, relieve pain and improve movement when appropriate.

The needles are very thin, and most people feel little or no discomfort when they are inserted. You may occasionally feel a brief twitch, ache or cramping sensation when the targeted muscle responds.

Your comfort always comes first. Dry needling is only used when it is appropriate for your condition, and you can choose not to have it at any time.

Cupping uses gentle suction to create a lifting effect on the skin and underlying tissues. It may help temporarily reduce muscular tightness and discomfort and improve the feeling of movement in a targeted area.

Cupping is not about “pulling toxins out”. It is one treatment tool that may be used alongside other techniques depending on your needs.

Taping can provide additional support and sensory feedback during movement. Depending on how it is applied, it may help you feel more supported or comfortable while performing daily activities or exercising.

Taping is usually used as part of a broader treatment plan rather than as a standalone solution.

Not necessarily. Pain is not always coming from the area where you feel it. During your assessment, we look at your symptoms, movement and the surrounding areas to better understand what may be contributing to your discomfort.

Don’t Just Treat the Pain. Understand It.
